From top-up cards to tap-and-pay

When eSewa launched in 2009, loading money meant buying a scratch card from a counter that also sold phone credit. Fifteen years later the same company clears everything from electricity bills to school fees through a QR sticker taped to a vegetable cart. That arc — scratch card to QR sticker — is the shortest summary of Nepal's financial-technology story anyone has managed to write.

The Reserve Bank of Nepal did not merely permit this shift; it engineered parts of it. Mandatory licensing, the national payment switch, interoperable QR standards and strict KYC rules created a sandbox strict enough to be trustworthy and loose enough to let three or four private players fight for every rupee.

The numbers behind the habit

Three forces compounded into that curve. First, COVID lockdowns turned QR from novelty to necessity almost overnight. Second, interoperability rules meant one sticker accepted every wallet, collapsing the biggest reason to carry cash. Third, remittance inflows gave rural households their first bank accounts, which wallets then digitised without asking permission.

We stopped asking customers whether they have a wallet. We ask which one they checked this morning.

Before the central bank forced common-QR rules, merchants needed a separate standee per wallet. One sticker accepting all of them removed the last practical excuse to keep a cash drawer — and quietly made the wallets compete on experience instead of exclusivity.

What the wallets still cannot do

Cash-in-cash-out agents remain the true backbone outside Ring Road: the digital layer ends where the nearest agent's cashbox empties. Credit is still thin — wallets move money but rarely lend against behaviour the way UPI-linked fintechs in India now do. And reconciliation for small merchants remains a spreadsheet ritual, because receipts land in apps rather than ledgers.

The next decade will be judged on exactly those gaps: lending scores built from payment histories, merchant tools that close books automatically, and whether any wallet survives going public without losing its product edge.
