About

Yogyakarta (often called Yogya or Jogja) is the soul of Java. The 9th-century Borobudur Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a massive stepped pyramid with over 2,600 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. Sunrise visits to Borobudur are magical as the mist lifts to reveal the surrounding mountains.

Prambanan Temple compound features towering Hindu temples dedicated to the Trimurti: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The main temple rises 47 meters and is covered in reliefs depicting the Ramayana epic. The Ramayana ballet is performed here during full moon nights.

The Sultan's Palace (Kraton) is the cultural and spiritual heart of the city, with traditional architecture, gamelan performances, and puppet shows. Yogyakarta is also Indonesia's batik capital, with workshops offering classes. Jalan Malioboro is the main shopping street with batik, handicrafts, and street food.
